In the majority of music videos they follow a narrative structure. As part of our research, we have been looking at real media examples, which are in the music charts which follow a narrative structure. One of these videos is One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful.
Plot/Narrative:
- All five of the boys enter the beach with their friends having a good time, alone.
- On holiday together
- A group of girls are alone in their cars, going on holiday to the same place as the boys.
- They all meet up, and go to the beach together (having fun in the sand/sea)
- Harry confronts a girl, and sings to her, telling her what he thinks of her.
- Disruption of the video – girls arriving in their beetle car.
Theories:
- Todorov: equilibrium then disruption and finally re-equilibrium
The equilibrium in the music video is One Direction on holiday with their friends (which are all boys) on the beach having fun. Then suddenly there is a disruption which is the girls turning up and ruining the boy get-together. Finally the re-equilibrium is the boys and girls getting together, at a campfire.
- Levi- Strauss: this is when there is conflict in the media text
This theory is not used in this video, as they all get along and there is no conflict.
Characters:
- The boys: dressed like a boy band
- Very mainstream
